It was a scary time for Amanda* and her mom. Her mom was constantly worried about how to pay the bills, buy food and keep their apartment. Moving out of the area, having Amanda and her younger daughter change schools and leaving all of their friends seemed to be the only viable option for the family. While her mom was figuring out how to maintain their current life, Amanda and her younger sister’s academic performances declined. It was increasingly harder for Amanda and her sister to concentrate at school because the majority of the time they were hungry. United Community Ministries was able to help Amanda’s mom find a new job and a new sense of self. Still living in the same apartment, daughters are attending the same school, and are earning impressive grades, Amanda’s mom has been smiling nonstop. Due to her mom’s nonstop smiling, Amanda and her sister have not stopped smiling either.
