Information on Back Porch Thrift Store Donations

Donations are received Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the Back Porch Thrift Store located at 7838 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA 22306 (in the Mt. Vernon Crossroads Shopping Center). The Back Porch Thrift Store welcomes the donation of items in good, gently used and working condition.  If you are unsure whether an item fits these criteria, a good rule of thumb is to ask yourself, "Would I give this to someone I know?", or "Would I buy this item in this condition?"

UCM and the Back Porch do not set a value on your donation.  That is the privilege and responsibility of the donor.  For professional advice, please consult your tax advisor.

Donations Which We Very Much Appreciate:

*  Clothing - Men’s Women’s & Children’s (particularly in-season clothing)
*  Designer label clothing
*  Gently used furniture - upholstered items that have no stains or tears
*   Mattresses and box springs that have no stains or tears
*  Musical instruments
*  Jewelry
*  Collectibles
*  Unique decorator Items
*  Housewares - sets of dishes, glassware, small kitchen appliances
*   Pictures, frames, lamps
*  All books - hardback & paperback, LP Records, CDs & tapes
* Digital TVs, VCRs and Disc Players (TVs must be cable ready - no analog TVs without the converter box)
* We are now accepting refrigerators and up-right freezers only.  No stoves, ovens or dishwashers.

• Building and plumbing materials
• Cabinet Hi-Fis and stereos
• Carpets and padding larger than 8' x 12'
• Children's car seats
• Computers, computer printers and scanners - Contact Computer Recycling (see below)
• Computer instruction and self-help books for outdated computer systems
• Computer software older than 2 years
• Cosmetics and hair care products
• Encyclopedia sets
• Fax machines
• Firearms, fireworks and ammunition
• Furniture that is broken, in disrepair or with stains, tears and/or pet hair
• Large appliances (other than the refrigerators and freezers noted above)
• Light fixtures
• Mattresses and box springs with stains or tears
• Anything of a pornographic nature
• Reader's Digest books
• Skates and skis of all types
• Text books and periodicals
• Toys and games with missing pieces
• Venetian blinds and shades
• Windows, doors, screens, old kitchen cabinets
• Water beds

We cannot accept items that are wet, upholstered items with rips, tears, stains or soiled in any other manner.
