Workforce Development Center
UCM's Workforce Development Services are designed to:
- reduce barriers to employment
- increase the short- and long-term employability of our clients
- increase our clients' confidence and self-esteem
SERVICES
- One-on-one job counseling
- Clients are educated on how to access a variety of resources as a means of developing an effective job search strategy. Counseling may include:
- Job search tips are provided and clients are taught how to access computer jobs on-line. Computer assistance includes, but is not limited to, registering for free e-mail and the identification of employment and training websites.
- Evaluation of clients skill levels. Opportunities for enhancing these skill levels are further explored.
- Computer classes
- Presently computer classes are offered in basic keyboarding, MS Word and Excel and Windows XP. Different levels of instruction are taught and new computer software programs will be offered to address our client's needs.
- Micro Enterprise Workshops
- Our basic business course consists of 8 modules covering a variety of business topics such as:
- Pro's and con's of owning your own business
- Marketing and price strategies
- Business structure and record keeping
- Licensing
- Understanding financial statements, cash flow and taxes
- Goal setting
- Time management
- Business planning
- An advanced business course is offered for students who have completed the basic business course.
- Workshops
- Promoting Your Hidden Talents
- Participants are encouraged to identify their dream job. Tips on the following are provided; preparing a winning resume and cover letter, applying on-line, how to succeed at job fairs, networking as a way of improving your career opportunities.
- Also discussed are the issues of protecting your privacy when using the Internet for job search purposes.
- An extensive listing of websites for finding jobs is provided
- New You
- Job search assistance program that focuses on the use of mentors to assist participants in enhancing their confidence and self-esteem
- Resume Preparation
- Clients are advised on how to strengthen their resume or, if they do not have one, job counselors can prepare one for them
- English as a Second Language
(ESL)
- ESL classes are offered in the evenings.
- Interview Coaching
- Effective interview preparation tips and techniques as well as mock interviews
